Checking in on the CVHS Football Squad

Falcons prep for first season without program staple Gordon Warnock, who died last fall.

With every new football season comes new and old names and faces. In the case of Crescenta Valley, there will be a void of a face that played such a big part in the history of the school’s program.

The Falcons enter the 2011 football season without coach Gordon Warnock, who had been around the program for more than 40 years.

Warnock, who led CV to the school’s lone CIF title in 1973, died last September at the age of 79.

He had been Falcons’ head coach from 1967 to 1976 and from 1979 to 1984 as well as a stint as the interim coach for four games in 2006. He was an assistant last season until his passing.

“This is going to be our first season going into the year without Coach Warnock,” second-year Falcons head coach Paul Schilling said. “We do a lot of the drills that he instituted here. It will be weird without him.”

After going 4-6 last season, Schilling has put together a busy summer to get ready for the fall.

“We’re probably play up to 60 passing type games against schools. We’re in six tournaments,” Schilling said. “In think in our five-week summer program we’ll have I want to say like 13 practices. We have so many throwing days. In 25 days, there is only half the time that we’re actually here having regular practice.”

Senior Zac Wilkersen will be given the keys to quarterback the Falcon offense as he did for part of last season.

Schilling is looking at senior Marro Lee as the main offensive weapon.

“We’ll figure out ways to get him the ball,” Schilling said. "Marro got hurt (last season) and only played five games. We were 4-1 and then we didn’t win another game.”

Wide out Nick Ruiz is expected to be the leading receiving threat for the Falcons.
