Getting to Know CV Town Council President Cheryl Davis

A proud resident of La Crescenta for nine years, she has been on Town Council nearly half that time!

In her second consecutive term on the Crescenta Valley Town Council, Cheryl Davis enthusiastically serves as the president -- a position, she jokes, she took because “nobody else wanted to be president.”

Jokes aside, Davis ran because she was passionate about issues in the local community, particularly that of creating a local dog park, a dream which just came to fruition July 26 as the . This, of course, wasn't her only goal.

Davis and the Council are in the incipient stages of creating a skate park in La Crescenta-Montrose, inspired by the kids from the local youth group "Firehouse," where Davis, incidentally, volunteers her time. The teens, she explains, are "looking for things to do and places to go and I think that’s a great idea. [The skate park] is in the very, very beginning stages. We’re not talking the permanent, cement underground type; we’re talking above ground -- it could even be a temporary one, possibly. Just something for the kids to do."

Davis' daughter, Katie, is starting ninth grade at  in the fall, and it was Katie's education that originally brought the Davis family to La Crescenta nine years ago. "We moved for the school district. GUSD has excellent schools. Katie went to  and ," Davis said.

And after Katie graduates? "I have no plans of leaving," Davis said. "There's this very different sense of community that I feel [here]. The Chamber, the local groups, the churches, the fireworks group, Prom Plus, the Firehouse -- I don’t know that anyone could say they’re bored here, because there’s so many things to get involved with."

Davis is certainly involved; in addition to her presidency on the Council (which is a volunteer position) and work with the Firehouse, she also serves as the volunteer treasurer for the Fireworks Association and as the volunteer treasurer for CV Dogs (a local group who helped bring the dog park about). Davis also works as the office administrator for a law firm in Glendale.

With all these things on her plate, a toll has to be taken somewhere. For Davis, it's the kitchen. "It’s a well known fact I don't cook," she laughs. "We eat out a lot." She cites all the fastfood spots along Foothill Boulevard as family favorites. She also loves  and . Anyone who works as hard as Davis definitely needs a Domino's break every now and again!

Since Davis has been with the Council, she's worked toward and seen a lot of change happen. Lately, the Council has seen bike lanes and racks come to Foothill Boulevard, and is currently prepared to start construction of a "Welcome to La Crescenta" sign on Penn Blvd. and Encinal Ave. in August.

In addition to projects, issues come up all the time that the Council has to take care of. Davis shares one recent incident: "One business tried to put up a sign and it was blue, and technically according to the Community Standards District, it had to be earth-tone, and blue isn’t considered an 'earthtone.' So, we have a committee to go back and look at [issues] like that."

Davis wants to invite the community to be a part of the Council; "we're always looking for people," she says. If you're a registered voter in La Crescenta or Montrose, you're welcome to run for Council. In November, the Council will hold an election for three three-year seats and three one-year seats.

"I hope people understand that the Council is a group of volunteers. We give as much time as we can. We love to talk to people, we love to hear from people."
