How Much Is that Doggy in the Window?

Adopt Maddie and Mindy at Andersen's Pet Shop, which provides foster care for rescued canines.

Meet Maddie and Mindy, two of  latest additions up for adoption. At 11 weeks old, these poodle-terriers are little balls of fluff and joy, just waiting for a family to take them home.

Tom Russell, owner of , explains that every few month, he and his wife, Alyce, who is the co-owner, as well as the director of the Glendale Humane Society, take in dogs or cats at their local store.

The Glendale Humane Society is the only public shelter that is "no kill." It will not euthanize pets under any circumstance and does its best to transfer pets from other Los Angeles shelters so they can save more lives. Furthermore, "Los Angeles won't take care of them the way we will," Russell explains.

Maddie and Mindy are currently featured on the Glendale Humane Society's website. Maddie is described as "sweet, well-mannered and very loving." Mindy, too, is a "furry bundle of sweetness" and is called "inquisitive and rambunctious." Both of these "pint-sized peanuts" are "full of spirit" and would be great for "a family with kids over the age of 5."

To adopt one or both of these sisters, fill out an application, which can also be found on the site. Adoption fees (which cover shots, microchipping, spaying or neutering and a vet check) range from $100-300.

Russell notes that adopting a pet "enhances the family." Personally, he "can't imagine growing up without a pet." Adopting an animal, in his opinion, seems like an obvious choice that allows people to "appreciate" Earth's creatures. For those who, like Russell, can't imagine life without a four-legged friend, stop by Andersen's Pet Shop to meet Maddy and Mindy in person.

Andersen's Pet Shop also offers a large selection of reptiles, birds, fish and guinea pigs, as well as pet supplies and grooming services. Andersen's, a family-owned business established in 1950, has been voted "best pet store" by Pasadena Weekly and The Glendale News-Press.

Call them at 818-249-1724. The store is located at 2218 Honolulu Ave. and is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sunday.
