Every piece on Pasadena Community Orchestra’s upcoming concert is infused with joy. Not one but two superb pianists (Dr. Peter Green and Dr. Jungwon Jin) share the stage with Pasadena Community Orchestra in a rare performance of Poulenc’s “Concerto for Two Pianos.” Poulenc successfully recreates the joyful atmosphere of a famously luxurious 1932 Paris salon” the music is at times playful and breezy, yet also languorous and dreamy, with influences ranging from Mozart to Balinese gamelan to jazz. For even more joy, the orchestra, under the direction of Bethany Pflueger, presents Beethoven’s “Symphony #7.” The work ranges from “breathless but utterly joyful mania” to the richest and tenderest slow movement of Beethoven’s career. And before these two rich entreés comes the light and sparkling “Overture to An Italian Girl in Algiers” by Rossini. Previewing the humor and surprises in the opera itself, this music interrupts tiptoeing solos with loud chords, has woodwinds chasing scurrying violins, and finishes with a rousing crescendo. Audience members may meet the musicians at a reception following the concert. Admission is free, and no reservations are necessary.
