Katherine Kean's Atmospheric Paintings Selected for the National Weather Center Biennale

I Stop for Drops and The Weight of Air, oil paintings by Tujunga artist Katherine Kean have been selected for inclusion in the National Weather Center Biennale, an international juried exhibition sponsored by the University of Oklahoma and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, in collaboration with the Norman Arts Council. The exhibition will present “Art’s Window on the Impact of Weather on the Human Experience.” Kean’s paintings are among 88 works selected for the prestigious show. Mel Chin, internationally established fine artist, serves as guest juror for the competition, the only international exhibition showcasing artwork with weather as its central theme. In conjunction with Earth Day 2015, the exhibition opens on Sunday, April 19 and closes Sunday, June 14, 2015.

“Weather phenomena, such as the strange twilight caused by a storm suddenly and dramatically changing the angle of the sun’s rays and for a moment relighting the scene, have a huge effect on our view of the landscape.” says the artist. “Science has shown that art and beauty have a healing effect as the experience of awe boosts our bodies’ immune system. I hope my paintings stir wonder, curiosity, and excitement for the transformative impacts of weather, while revealing the serene center that can arise in the midst of Nature’s turbulence.”

About the Artist – Katherine Kean has exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States, including The LACMA Art Rental and Sales Gallery and the Brand Library Art Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work was selected for inclusion in the 2009 Schiffer publication 100 Artists of the West Coast II, and Bloomingdales selected one of her cloudscape paintings to be part of the collection for their new store in Santa Monica, CA.
