TUJUNGA, CA -- Authorities Monday identified a man who was killed in an apartment fire in Tujunga.

The fire was reported at 10:55 p.m. Saturday at 7053 Greeley St., said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Jesse Arellano, 60, died at the scene, the coroner's office reported. A woman was treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

It took 34 firefighters 16 minutes to put out the flames, which were confined to three rooms of the apartment in the 26-unit, almost 20,000-square- foot building constructed in 1963, Humphrey said. The dead man was found in the kitchen of the burned apartment, he said.

"Though remnants of a smoke alarm were noted in the burnt apartment, its functional status at the time of the blaze could not be immediately determined," Humphrey said. "The 54-year-old building was not equipped with optional residential fire sprinklers."
