Mother Teresa Seeks Slow Build
Unfortunately for my waning ego—now sans halo—Montrose local Alik shared her secret to staying perfectly angelic.
On my way to the dentist last week, I spotted Alik and her clearly strong presence in the corner of Montrose’s most popular coffee klatch—The Bean. I actually hate the shortened surname version of my nemesis, but for the sake of attempting to be clever, I will make the exception. But this story isn’t about me, it’s about Alik—a seriously cool, top notch human being with a true penchant for giving.

Where are you from?
I’m and I was born in Beruit, Lebanon. I grew up here, though.
What do you do around here?
I work with MS patients. I do most of the office work at YTM Services. It’s a private company.
That’s intense.
Yeah. One of my friends actually just got diagnosed right after I started working there.
Makes my job look unfulfilling. You’re dealing with real problems and my job is like, “Hey, so what do you do around Montrose?”
I’m sure you get to meet a lot of people, though. I have lived in Glendale all of my life, but I work close to here and I tutor a first grader around here twice a week at the .
You’re like the Mother Teresa of Montrose. Saving MS patients by day and helping the children by night. Do you date much here?
Not really. It’s sort of like a ghost town around here. I do come here to go to bar or the movie with friends. But other than that, if you come here after a certain time, it’s literally like tumbleweeds.
What are you doing at The Bean?
I’m waiting for my . I don’t drive.
Why is that?
I never got a or anything. I just don’t drive. I take the bus or I will walk. I see the gas prices and it’s crazy.
You’re economical. Have you dated much in your years?
Not too much. I’ve had one serious relationship that might take hours to explain.
I’m not the one saving the world so I’ve got nothing but time.
Well, it sucked the life out of me, I’ll tell you that. But I am seeing someone right now. We are just taking it really slow because the last one lasted eight years. The new one has been a few years but I like the very slow pace of it.
What do you do for fun besides walking?
I go to a lot of events. Music events and raves. Even though that sounds strange. For me, it’s not about drugs and light-watching. My friends and I go because we like the music and we like to take in the ambiance.
What do you think the percentage of drug usage is at these raves nowadays?
The majority, perhaps 99 percent. You can always tell when they are on a good one. Even if they hold it well, you can still tell. I am going to see Adele in June.
Is she new? If she’s not part of Hall and Oates, I won’t know her.
She came from the UK and just blew up here.
What are the top three qualities you look for in a person?
Sense of , honesty and I want to say family-oriented.
Marriage one day?
I’m going to be completely honest, scares the living crap out of me. I don’t want to get married. I could change my mind one day, but the thought of it genuinely freaks me out. I see a lot people who get married and then the relationship changes almost instantly. And I feel like it sucks the passion out of it.
Kids?
I would adopt. There are a lot of kids that need saving.
You just want to keep making me look bad, huh? Anything you want to add? Like saving?
I am actually surprised that I was willing to do this interview. I am really shy normally. But I realized lately that I have opened up more. I am a social butterfly, but usually on the spot, I close up.
See! I knew there was something wrong with you.
