Two Strike Hits a Home Run

As of last week, recently-built play structures at are all open and ready for action. An enormous colorful structure graces the main playground, a smaller jungle gym is just above it, and across the path, there’s a faux rock climbing compound for the little ones.

 “It’s cool!” said Nick Nally, age five. “This one is my favorite slide!” Nally and other children scrambled across ladders, over bridges, up climbing walls and down twisty, bumpy and curved slides, all while nicely protected from the elements under brightly colored cantilevered shades. 

Margie Quick Emmons, Nally’s grandmother, declared, “I used to play on the previous structure when I went to school at . They needed new equipment. This is much nicer.” 

Nothing could stop Julian Pechet, age 4, from playing on the big structure. Even though he’s a little young for the intended age range of 5 to 12, his mother encouraged him to go for it. “He’s got big brothers and sisters,” she said, “and he really likes the challenge.”

Across the path, kids of all ages attacked “rock” walls and hung up-side down on sturdy ropes. Some were nervous about climbing back down, but with determination, they all succeeded. The structures are a big hit with the elementary set!

According to Maeve McConnell, head of public information for Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation, this new playground has been in the works for some time. It was paid for by a measure approved in 2007.
