Church To Use Classic TV Show Characters to Teach About Classic Vices. Community invited to sermon series “Gilligan’s Island and the Seven Deadly Sins”
Gilligan. The Skipper too. The Millionaire and his wife. The Movie Star. The Professor and Mary Ann. Yes, they’re the castaways on “Gilligan’s Island” but did you know each is also an example of one of the seven deadly sins? Moorpark Presbyterian Church will explore these characters and their Biblical counterparts in a seven week sermon series “Avoiding Rocks That Can Shipwreck Your Life: Gilligan’s Island and the Seven Deadly Sins,” beginning Sunday, February 19 at 8:15 & 10:45am.
“Pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust – the seven deadly sins – are not necessarily what we think they are,” said Pastor Dave Wilkinson. “For example, sloth, exemplified by Gilligan and in the Bible by King David, isn’t really about being lazy. It’s about saying ‘Whatever’ to life; it’s about not caring.”

Associate Pastor Janet Loughry noted, “Using the characters of “Gilligan’s Island” gives us a light-hearted way in to a deeper conversation. And, in addition to the sermons, people also have the opportunity of joining a small group to discuss each week’s topic and share experiences, faith and hope.”
Wilkinson added, “This series coincides with the season of Lent – a time of spiritual renewal and growth in the days leading up to Easter. So this study isn’t about making us feel bad about ourselves or humanity in general; its purpose is to see how we can actually change – or at least greatly lessen the impact of these things in our lives – through the power of God. So if you’re wondering if it’s possible to overcome your inner Envious Mary Ann or Prideful Professor, come join us and find out.”
