Meet an “Amazing” Honored For His Passion Of The Violin

The violin has been Julai's love ever since he was 6 years old.

Julai Tan, at 93, was invited to perform for Singapore’s 2018 National Day Parade, a tremendous honor, which he accepted with pride. The violin has been Julai’s love ever since he was 6 years old after being entranced by a boarder staying at the family home who played the violin.

Julai began studying the violin the next year, but had to stop due to the Japanese Occupation. During that time, he played at restaurants to obtain food for his family. Later, he became a self-taught accomplished violinist, learning with each new performance. He performed with the Singapore Radio Orchestra, the BBC orchestra, and when he returned to Singapore, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore.
