Meet An “Amazing” Who Realized His Dream Of A University Degree

Giuseppe Paterno, at 96, graduated first in his class with top honors, receiving his undergraduate degree in History and Philosophy from the University of Palermo to the warm applause of his fellow (much younger!) students. Giuseppe had always longed for knowledge, but life, WWII (he’s a Italian Navy vet), and family duties prevented his ability to devote himself to studies. Once retired from his job as a railway worker, however, Giuseppe started thinking “Why not?”

At 90, he enrolled at the university. Giuseppe faithfully attended classes until the pandemic forced a shutdown. He began attending classes online. He wasn’t going to let COVID interfere with his dream. Not only did he succeed brilliantly, but Giuseppe now looks forward to exploring literature and hopefully, to write as well.
