Meet An “Amazing” Whose Characters Delight Children Worldwide

Beverly Cleary, at 103, has the distinction of being a best-selling author of children's books.

Beverly Cleary, at 103, has the distinction of being a best-selling author of children’s books, having created characters that continue to delight young people worldwide, in particular: Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins with his dog Ribsy, and Ralph S. Mouse. Designated a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, Beverly’s beginnings were more than modest.

Beverly grew up in a town so small, it didn’t even have a library. Her mother remedied that by contacting the State Library to have books delivered, and it was then that Beverly discovered her love of books. Beverly’s characters are based on children she knew growing up and those she observes in the world around her. Her books are ageless and timeless, like, well - Ramona, Henry and Ralph.
