Meet an “Amazing” Whose Kite-Flying Prowess Astounded The World

Ray Bethell, at 90, was undoubtedly one of the most acclaimed professional kite flyers ever.

Ray Bethell, at 90, was undoubtedly one of the most acclaimed professional kite flyers ever. Although Ray never even held a kite, had no interest in kites and knew nothing about them until he was 56, he more than made up for it in the 30+ years in the sport.

Ray was known especially for his ability to handle three stunt kites at the same time, one in each hand and one from his hips, which earned him several world endurance records. Not only that, Ray could fly stacks of kites, up to 39 in total. No wonder Ray was an always-popular participant at International Kite Festivals.. His abilities he said came from practice, practice and more practice as he sought to improve his skills every time he flew a kite.
