Simi Valley Y’s Youth & Government Program Kicks-Off
The statewide, six-month program is for high schoolers who want to learn about government and the democratic process.
The Simi Valley Family YMCA’s new Youth & Government program is starting up with two parent/youth information meetings, Tuesday, August 29 and Thursday, August 31 at 6:00 p.m. at the Y (3200 Cochran St.)
The statewide, six-month program is for high schoolers who want to learn about government and the democratic process. It provides youth with hands-on experience in the workings of state government. Participants are trained in government and court roles as they prepare for a Model Legislature and Court Conference at the State Capitol in Sacramento in February. Two training weekends will take place in Fresno in November and January.
Teens will meet weekly beginning in September at the Simi Y where they prepare pieces of legislation and joint resolutions for the conference.

“Participants acquire leadership, public speaking and critical thinking skills,” says Ryan Fowler, senior program director at the Simi Y. “They also gain self-confidence and meet lots of new friends. It’s a great high school experience.”
