10-Year-Old Tracked By Police K-9 Detained In Playground Stabbing Of Boy, 7

The 10-year-old suspect was identified through surveillance video and a K-9 track before being taken into custody, police said.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — The 10-year-old suspect detained in connection with a stabbing in Mountain View on Wednesday afternoon has been transferred to the custody of mental health clinicians, police said.

The stabbing occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the Bubb Elementary School’s play yard area during an after-school program, police said. A 7-year-old child was injured in the incident, sustaining three stab wounds to the shoulder. The victim was treated at the scene by fire department personnel and later released to a parent, police said. Their injuries were reported as minor.

The 10-year-old suspect reportedly fled the scene before officers arrived.

Mountain View Police launched a neighborhood search and used residential surveillance video, which allowed an officer, who recognized the suspect from prior contact, to identify him.

The Los Altos Police Department K-9 unit then tracked the suspect from the school to his residence. Officers said they coordinated with a guardian to detain the 10-year-old without incident.

A kitchen knife is believed to have been used in the assault and was recovered at the scene, police said.

The Mountain View Police Department is continuing its active investigation into the incident.
