Fatal Crash Blocks U.S. Highway 101 In Silicon Valley

UPDATED: A Sig-Alert for northbound 101 in Sunnyvale was lifted by about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.

SILICON VALLEY, CA — A Sig-Alert was in effect Wednesday morning on northbound U.S. Highway 101 in Sunnyvale because of a fatal crash near Mathilda Avenue. At about 7 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol, a gray Toyota Prius went over a guardrail and off the left side of 101.

Personnel with the Santa Clara County coroner's office were summoned to the scene at about 7:19 a.m.

A CHP spokesman said person who died was a 52-year-old man who apparently suffered a medical emergency, possibly a heart attack.

He drove the car toward the center divider, where it came to rest with its left front wheel resting against the wall, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.

The man's name was not yet being released.

A Sig-Alert for the far left lane of northbound 101 just south of the Mathilda Avenue offramp was lifted as of about 10:15 a.m.
