Police Alert: Take Care If Hiking Montara Area

Authorities in San Mateo County are warning that a mountain lion may be in the Montara area after a hiker found a deer carcass this morning that appeared to have been attacked on a hiking trail.

The carcass was found at 8:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Elm and George streets, according to the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services.

Sheriff’s dispatchers said the mountain lion sighting has not yet been confirmed, however.

The Office of Emergency Services is advising people not to approach mountain lions, especially if they are feeding or with their offspring, and to avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk, or at night.

If a mountain lion encounter does occur, authorities advise people to face the animal, make a lot of noise, waving their arms to look big and throw things at the cat.
