2 Murrieta Schools Lauded Nationally For Counseling Efforts

MURRIETA, CA — Cole Canyon and Lisa J. Mails elementary schools in Murrieta, along with their counselors, were recognized for their counseling programs by the American School Counselor Association at a ceremony held last week, according to district officials.

The Recognized ASCA Model Program — "RAMP" — distinction is awarded to schools with stellar counseling efforts tied to positive student educational and behavioral outcomes, according to the nationwide organization.

Attending the ASCA Annual Conference, held July 13 in Las Vegas, were Felipe Zanartu, Cole Canyon school counselor and Jodi Spoon-Sadlon, counselor at Lisa J. Mails, which also was selected as a School of Distinction for earning a perfect score.

"We are proud of the accomplishments of our Student Support teams and the dedication our school counselors have displayed," said Mary Walters, Murrieta Valley USD assistant superintendent of educational services. "This award underscores the priority MVUSD has placed on meeting the needs of our students and their families to increase outcomes and promote student success.”

RAMP honorees are awarded for aligning their programs with criteria in the ASCA National Model, a framework for a data-informed school counseling program, according to ASCA. The goal is to address all students' need for postsecondary readiness and success, and close achievement and opportunity gaps, with the desired aim of improved student achievement, attendance and discipline.

“This year’s RAMP honorees have shown their commitment to students and the school counseling profession,” said Jill Cook, ASCA executive director. “These schools used data to drive their program development and implementation so all students can achieve success. The RAMP designation distinguishes these schools and encourages school counselors nationwide to strive for excellence.”

Since the program’s inception, more than 900 schools earned the RAMP designation. For more information on RAMP, follow this link.
