The dog was found in what animal control officers say was a major case of cruelty.

A Good Samaritan who brought a horrifically abused dog to the attention of the Riverside County Animal Services was allowed to adopt her, the agency reported.

Ernesto Perez was coming home from a late-night shift at work on June 4 in unincorporated Perris when he saw a dog with an embedded collar in her neck. When he saw her again the next morning, he and his girlfriend coaxed the dog out of hiding and contacted Animal Services.

The dog, whose name is Sadie, was in terrible condition. The 18-month-old pooch suffered from what animal control officers described as “embedded collar,” which occurs when a constricting device is left tightly wound around an animal’s neck so long that it lacerates and eventually kills the surrounding flesh.

Photos of the injured dog showed exposed dying flesh at least an inch deep.

Perez however, was not content to leave the dog in the county’s care. He bonded with the dog and asked to adopt her.

After Sadie has sufficiently healed, Perez and his girlfriend, were allowed to officially adopt the dog, the agency said. The couple said they may rename her ’Rosie.’
