MURRIETA, CA — One person is under arrest on suspicion of striking a Riverside County Sheriff's deputy and fleeing the scene Wednesday morning. The driver, whose name was not immediately released, was arrested shortly after fleeing the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. The deputy, who also was not identified, was last known to be in stable condition, according to the sheriff's department.
Shortly before 9 a.m., the Southwest Sheriff's Station deputy was conducting a vehicle stop in the area of Winchester Road and Murrieta Hot Springs Road when they were struck and injured in a hit-and-run collision, according to Officer Jesus Garcia of the Temecula CHP.
"During the traffic stop, while outside of his patrol vehicle, the deputy was struck by a passing vehicle and injured," according to Sgt. Robert Martinez.
"The deputy was transported to Inland Valley Hospital with unknown injuries, and the driver who struck the deputy was arrested by CHP," Garcia said.
The California Highway Patrol assumed the collision investigation. No other information was immediately available.
A closure was implemented in the area of Winchester Road and Robert Trent Jones Parkway. The closure remained in effect as of 12 p.m., according to police.
"Expect delays and use alternative routes through the area," Sgt. Matt Schmidt said. No other information was immediately available.
