Murrieta Driver Tips For Back To School Safety: 2023-24 School Year

Murrieta Valley Unified School District families prepare for the first day of school coming up on August 9. Watch the roads for school kids.

MURRIETA, CA — Murrieta students and families are prepping for back-to-school, with classes beginning Aug. 9. On the roads, police and deputies will be out and about keeping things safe for all. Here are a few tips for new drivers and student drivers as we head into the 2023-24 school year.

Riverside County Sheriff's Department reminded drivers to slow down, follow the speed limit and be extra careful driving through school zones.

“Please drive like it is your child, grandchild, niece or nephew walking or riding their bike to school,” they said in a recent news release. “If you see a vehicle stopped in the roadway in a school zone, assume they are waiting for a child to cross the road.”

If you are behind a school bus with a stop sign and flashing red lights, drivers need to stop so students can safely get on and off the bus. Drivers must remain stopped while the red lights are on. Drivers in both directions must stop on any two-lane road without a median or a center turn lane.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office offers the following tips to stay safe around schools:

  • Slow down and follow the speed limit.
  • Stop for school buses. Watch for children rushing to catch the bus or exiting.
  • Whenever possible, avoid blocking the crosswalk while waiting to make a right-hand turn.
  • For parents with children walking or biking to school, teach them safe walking and riding behaviors, such as looking both ways before crossing the street, using sidewalks when available, and crossing at marked crosswalks with stop signs or signals.
