Coroner IDs Victim In Deadly Winchester Road Crash

BREAKING: The man died at the scene of the fiery wreck on Sunday.

FRENCH VALLEY, CA — A man who died at the scene of a crash along Winchester Road on Sunday evening has been publicly identified by the Riverside County coroner's office. He was 35-year-old Jacob Prichard of Temecula.

Coroner's officials say Prichard died about 20 minutes after colliding with another vehicle in the intersection of Scott and Winchester (SR-79) roads on Sunday around 5:40 p.m.

Prichard was riding a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on Winchester Road "when he failed to stop for a red traffic signal at Scott Road," according to California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig.

"After entering the intersection, [Prichard] and his motorcycle were struck by the front of [a 2015 Ford Transit van] driven by [a 56-year-old Menifee woman], who had entered the intersection from Scott Road (westbound) on a green traffic signal," Lassig said in a news release. "After impact, both vehicles and [Prichard] traveled in a northwesterly direction through the sidewalk and into an adjacent dirt area where the Ford Transit impacted a barbwire fence."

Bystanders at the scene tried to give Prichard CPR and medical care, but he died at 5:57 p.m., according to Lassig and coroner's reports.

The woman driving the van was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Both the motorcycle and van caught fire after the collision — and the van caught fire for a second time as a tow truck driver was transporting it on Interstate 15 more than two hours later.

The Temecula Area CHP is investigating the crash.
