MURRIETA, CA — Signs of progress are evident in the Murrieta Library Children's Expansion project, a library spokesperson shared Thursday.

"Recently, you may have seen (and heard) some progress with the children's expansion project," they said. "We were able to look through the scrim and take a quick photo of what the building is looking like."

The plan was to grow the children's section's footprint to house everything the library needs to support children and their families for the life of the building.

From the photo, you can see the future Garden of Verses in the foreground, the new play area and picture books space, and the windows to the right are the new children's programming space.

"Not only did our recent Transitional-Kindergarten tours from Murrieta Elementary School get to look at the action, so did the Library staff."

Library staff was able to take a quick tour inside the expansion to get familiar with the space.

"Everyone was impressed with the work John and his team at RC Construction is doing," they said. "While the staff may not have an opening timeline for the expansion just yet, we know your patience and support will be worth the wait."

The Children’s Library Expansion is an $8 million project. Funding comes from a mix of State support through the California State Library’s Building Forward Grant; City funds from Library Development Impact Fees and Measure T; Community donations from the Murrieta Public Library Foundation, the Friends of the Murrieta Library, and local partners.

As of September 2025, the community has already committed more than $388,000: Murrieta Public Library Foundation: $135,000; Friends of the Murrieta Library: $103,400; Pending private sector commitments: $40,000; Water district support (including in-kind contributions and rebates): $110,000, according to the city.

Fundraising will continue throughout construction. Thus far, a GoFundMe for the space has raised over $8,250. "Every gift brings us closer to creating a dynamic new library space for Murrieta’s children," they said.

Soon, the library will look like its rendering.

The project will include:

  • Dedicated Storytime Suite: A 1,320-square-foot space that can be divided into two rooms.
  • Expanded Children’s Floor: Additional stacks and direct access to storytime rooms to ease crowding.
  • Flexible Learning Areas: Capacity for approximately 100 children for storytimes, crafts, STEM, and more.
  • Toddler & Sensory Zones: Interactive spaces for early learning and inclusive experiences.
  • Tween Zone: The existing 2,700-square-foot children’s area will be remodeled into a dedicated tween space.
  • Outdoor Garden Expansion: Enhancements to the Carol Carson Garden of Verses to support year-round programming.
