NWS: Heat Wave Finally Coming To An End In Riverside County

"Highs Thursday will be similar with temperatures about where they should be for late June."

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA - Wind gusts and low humidity were expected to keep the risk of fire high Wednesday as a massive brusher continues to rage in the San Gorgonio Pass. A National Weather Service red flag warning for the mountains, the San Gorgonio Pass zone, which includes Banning and Desert Hot Springs, and the remainder of the Coachella Valley expired at 1 a.m. Wednesday.

"Although Tuesday was still quite hot, the heat wave is finally coming to an end," the National Weather Service said on Wednesday. "The center of the upper high that brought all the heat has been forced southward into central Baja by a trough moving across the Great Basin.

"Lower heights and stronger onshore will result in about 5 degrees of cooling compared to Tuesday. Highs Thursday will be similar with temperatures about where they should be for late June."

Despite the red flag warning's expiration in the Pass Area, wind gusts between 30 and 45 mph remained possible Wednesday afternoon and evening, as the Manzanita Fire burned south of Beaumont at over 6,300 acres. The blaze was 43 percent contained as of Wednesday morning.

Humidity was expected to rise west of the mountain ridges, according to the NWS, limiting the fire risk there.

The county was expected to be cooler on the whole, though triple-digit temperatures were still expected in the eastern county, where a heat wave that peaked over the weekend broke records in parts of the Coachella Valley.

In the forecast Wednesday are highs of 88 to 95 degrees in the valleys around Riverside, 102 to 107 degrees in the San Gorgonio Pass zone and 105 to 110 degrees in the Coachella Valley. In the Temecula and Elsinore valleys, temperatures were expected to range between the high 80s and low 90s.
