MURRIETA, CA — Hundreds of local residents turned out Monday night to celebrate the 30th year of the Murrieta Police Department. The free open house event took place from 5-8 p.m. at the Murrieta police station located at 2 Town Square, and at nearby Town Square Park and Amphitheater.

Murrieta Police Chief Tony Conrad addressed the crowd and spoke about the department's history and mission, and reiterated its priority to remain "partners with our community."

The offices of state Senator Melissa Melendez and state Assemblyman Kelly Seyarto presented Conrad with a proclamation that recognized the police department's 30 years of service in Murrieta.

Riverside County Supervisor Chuck Washington also addressed the crowd and reflected on his time as a Murrieta City Councilman. He also spoke about the police department's role in helping maintain a good quality of life in Murrieta.

Murrieta Mayor Jonathan Ingram shared thoughts with the crowd and stated that providing "best-in-class" public safety remains a top priority for city leaders.

A recorded video message wrapped up the speeches. In it, the city's first Chief of Police, Larry Dean (who now lives in Utah), thanked the community for its dedication to creating the department 30 years ago and for continuing to make law enforcement a vital part of Murrieta.

Beyond the podium, the family-friendly event offered food and treats from the Riverside County Sheriff's Association BBQ Truck, Famous Pudn Signature Desserts, and Rita's Italian Ice and Custard.

The department conducted tours of the police station, and attendees interacted with the department's police dogs, motorcycles and dirt bikes from the traffic bureau, an armored Bearcat vehicle and SWAT exhibit, a mobile command post vehicle, and booths for the department's explorer and volunteer programs.

One of the department's original police cars was on display, and attendees could get their photo taken in front of it for free thanks to Photo Props.

Officers and volunteers also walked around handing out goodies, including bracelets, drink koozies, children's sunglasses, stickers, pins and goodie bags.

The Murrieta Police Department has been serving the community since August 1, 2002, just over one year after the city's incorporation on July 1, 1991. The department remains one of the few municipal police departments in Riverside County — most cities contract for police services through the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
