Police Release Details About Murrieta Park Shooting

Two juveniles and one 18-year-old man were arrested in the shooting that left one man wounded.

MURRIETA, CA — The Murrieta Police Department has released details Wednesday morning about a shooting at Alta Murrieta Sports Park that left one man wounded and three suspects jailed, including two juveniles.

Shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday, Murrieta police responded to the park at 39755 Alta Murrieta Drive on reports of shots fired there. When officers arrived, they found a man with "a gunshot wound," according to the department's update.

The man, whose identity was not released, was sent to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Witnesses had reported seeing a vehicle leave the park shortly after the shooting, and officers tracked it to Los Alamos Road. It was "determined the occupants were witnesses to the shooting," police said.

Based on evidence and witness information, three suspects — one man and two juveniles — were arrested by Murrieta police detectives about 12 hours after the shooting. A search warrant was also served in the city "where the weapon used in the shooting was located and recovered," police said.

The victim and the three suspects knew each other and had agreed to meet at the park prior to the shooting, according to police. There was no word on why they planned to meet there.

Leon Boswell, 18, of Murrieta was booked into Southwest Detention Center on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, second-degree robbery, infliction of great bodily injury, conspiracy, and using a firearm during a crime, according to jail records.

Boswell is being held in lieu of $2 million bail and is due to appear in court Thursday, jail records show.

The two juvenile suspects were later booked into the Riverside County Juvenile Hall in Murrieta. Their identities were withheld due to their age.

The investigation is ongoing, but police said the shooting was not random and there is no danger to the general public.

The shooting closed Alta Murrieta Drive for approximately 12 hours Tuesday while police investigated.
