Serving the Napa community is everything to Puertas Abiertas (napavalleyregister.com) β A Napa native, Esmeralda Gil now leads Puertas Abiertas, the longtime Soscol Avenue nonprofit supporting Latino and other local families with jobs, food access, and legal referrals. As demand for services grows amid wine-industry layoffs and immigration fears, Gil is expanding programs in the group's new Napa hub and planning the Sept. 25 Puro CorazΓ³n gala in American Canyon to sustain its work.

5. 20-year-old motorcyclist dies after Highway 29 crash in American Canyon (pressdemocrat.com) β A 20-year-old Vallejo motorcyclist died after a Sunday crash on Highway 29, despite being rushed first to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa and then to UC Davis Medical Center. The collision with a pickup in American Canyon snarled traffic for hours, and police say early findings show speed and alcohol were not factors as the investigation continues.
