Growing Orchids in Napa

Roots are what determine orchid health. The top of the plant is slow to react to root damage.

This is a picture of the roots of a Cattleya loddigesii seedling that I am re-potting. All the medium (rocks) has been removed. What is left is a pot full (but not too full) of healthy roots.

Cattleya loddigesii grows in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. It is fragrant, cool to warm growing and can grow in sunlight. The flowers are long lasting and blooming is in late summer.

This is a very good root formation. When re-potting this is the sort of roots that tell me that the plant has been well grown since the last time it was re-potted. Roots are what determine orchid health. The top of the plant is slow to react to root damage.

In general, orchids should be re-potted every two years. Orchids cannot remain healthy if they stay in the same medium too long.
