Newell Fire In American Canyon 60 Percent Contained

An evacuation warning for the 132-acre fire was lifted.

NAPA COUNTY, CA — The Newell Fire that broke out Monday evening in American Canyon was 132 acres and 60 percent contained Tuesday morning, according to an update from Cal Fire.

An evacuation warning was briefly in effect Monday night for the Newell Fire, which started arond 6 p.m. at Newell Drive and Silver Oak Trail, near American Canyon High School and the Newell Open Space Preserve in American Canyon.

Within about an hour, the blaze spread to 150 acres — although the acreage has since been corrected to 132 due to better mapping, Cal Fire's Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit said Tuesday morning.

As the fire raged Monday night, the Napa County Office of Emergency Services issued an evacuation warning around 7:30 p.m. for the following zones:

  • ACY-E003: This zone is located to the north of South Napa Junction Road and east of Broadway Street 29. Main Street Park lies in the east-west part of the zone.
  • ACY-E004: This zone is located to the south of South Napa Junction Road, east boundary includes American Canyon High School, north of American Canyon Road and east of Broadway Street 29.
  • ACY-E007: This zone is located to the south of American Canyon Road, west of Flosden Road, north of Avenida Yucatan and east of Sonoma Blvd 29.
  • ACY-E008: This zone is located to the south of American Canyon Road and east of Flosden Road. (Napa County residents can check their evacuation zone by entering their address online at Zonehaven.com.)

"An evacuation warning indicates that residents in this area should be preparing to evacuate, if ordered," the sheriff's office said. "Anyone that may have difficulty evacuating quickly, should consider evacuating as a precaution. If you’re in the area and feel unsafe, evacuate as a precaution."

However, at 8:14 p.m. Monday as news of some containment was announced, the Napa County Sheriff's Office said the evacuation warning was lifted.

American Canyon Road was closed for several hours but at 10:15 p.m. Monday the roadway was reopened in both directions.
