Napa Burglars' Bungle: Sheriff's Sergeant Is Waiting Inside

NAPA, CA - Three burglars got a surprise when they entered a home in rural Napa County on Monday to find a sheriff's sergeant inside.

The sergeant was making lunch at his home in the 2100 block of Monticello Road in unincorporated Napa County east of Napa around 1 p.m. when the burglars, wearing masks and dressed in black, walked through an open door of the home, sheriff's Capt Keith Behlmer said.

"The sergeant drew his weapon and said 'Freeze,'" Behlmer said.

The sergeant detained 19-year-old Jesse Reyes, of Napa, but the other two suspects fled, according to Behlmer.

Sheriff's deputies responded and found Luis Kevin Flores, 19, of Napa, and a 16-year-old juvenile in the area, Behlmer said.

The sergeant said one of the three suspects had what appeared to be a crowbar, but it was not found after the two suspects fled.

Reyes, Flores and the juvenile were arrested and are believed to be responsible for two other burglaries in east Napa County on Monday, Behlmer said.

"The sergeant showed incredible restraint by not shooting the first one who came through the door. We are highly trained, and shooting someone is not our first thought. I commend him for his restraint," Behlmer said.
