NAPA COUNTY, CA— A Napa man who was hospitalized in critical condition from injuries suffered in a deputy-involved shooting has died, the Napa County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday morning.

Juan Adrian Garcia, 47, of Napa, died at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday at Queen of the Valley hospital in Napa, according to a statement issued by sheriff's office Spokesman Henry Wofford.

"Losing a love one is extremely difficult," Wofford said. "Our condolences go out to Juan Garcia’s family members and friends."

Garcia was stopped by a Napa County sheriff's deputy at 10:10 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Kaiser Road and state Highway 221.

"After being stopped ... Garcia exited the vehicle with one hand tucked behind his back and began walking directly toward the deputy," Wofford said. "The deputy retreated while repeatedly asking the subject to stop and show his hands, but Garcia refused to comply."

According to the sheriff's office, Garcia kept his right hand tucked behind his back for nearly a minute as he advanced aggressively toward the retreating deputy.

As Garcia got within close range, the deputy fired his weapon.

Garcia refused to show his right hand, and it was later determined he was not holding anything, Wofford said.

Additional sheriff’s deputies and Napa Police Department officers soon arrived and immediately performed CPR and first aid, Wofford said.

Garcia was taken to Queen of the Valley, where he remained in critical condition until his death Tuesday night.

The deputy involved in the shooting was not injured in the incident.

The sheriff's office has not identified the deputy but said he has been placed on paid administrative leave under the department's protocol.

The sheriff's office has not given the reason for the traffic stop.

"I can't disclose that at this time," Wofford told Patch. "It is part of the investigation and will be disclosed shortly."

The county's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes members of the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office and the Napa Police Department, was continuing its investigation of the deputy-involved shooting.

The deputy was wearing a body-worn camera, and the sheriff's office said it will release the footage next week.

"The Napa County Major Crimes Task Force is diligently gathering facts on this incident," Wofford said. "Please note, the deputy was wearing a body worn camera (BWC), which was activated and captured the incident. The BWC video will be shared with the media and the public early next week."
