Napa County Voters Approve Tax Measures

NAPA COUNTY, CA – Napa County voters approved Measure Z, a quarter-cent sales tax to preserve and restore watersheds and protect natural open spaces, according to complete unofficial results from Tuesday's election.

The measure had 62.4 percent approval and needed just a simple majority to pass.

Saint Helena voters approved a half-cent sales tax for city services, street maintenance, police and fire response and pedestrian and traffic safety. Measure D needed a simple majority and received nearly 70
percent approval.

Napa County voters faced two measures on euthanasia at the animal shelter.

Voters approved Measure A that requires "cost-effective" efforts to reduce euthanasia, but defeated Measure B that called for using "all available resources" to reduce euthanasia.

Some county supervisors were concerned that Measure B's "all available resources" provision could subject the county to lawsuits and unlimited demands for resources in the future.

Measure B was already on the ballot, so the supervisors proposed Measure A. Both measures needed majority approval.

Measure A was approved with 70 percent of voters and Measure B received only 46 percent approval.
