Napa County Wildfire Caused By Equipment: Cal Fire

The fire started around 4:30 p.m. on July 28 in dry brush off of Arroyo Grande Drive and Steele Canyon Road.

NAPA COUNTY, CA -- The 135-acre Steele Fire near Lake Berryessa in July was caused by equipment use, Cal Fire officials announced today. The fire started around 4:30 p.m. on July 28 in dry brush off of Arroyo Grande Drive and Steele Canyon Road in the Berryessa Highlands community in Napa County. It destroyed eight homes and damaged four others.

Cal Fire Capt. Justin Hartman said the equipment use category includes small engine equipment a homeowner, contractor or laborer may use.

It includes a chainsaw, weed eater, tiller or similar equipment.

The specific equipment that started the fire was not included in today's report, Hartman said.

A more complete report will be issued by Cal Fire's legal department in Sacramento, he said.
