Napa PD To Conduct DUI Saturation Patrol

The Napa Police Department announced that its DUI Enforcement Team will be patrolling for suspected drug- and/or alcohol-impaired drivers.

NAPA, CA — The Napa Police Department announced it will be conducting DUI saturation patrols Friday night within the city. The department's DUI Enforcement team will be deployed between the hours of 6 p.m. Nov. 10 and 1 a.m. Nov. 11, NPD Traffic Sgt. Kristofer Jenny said in a news release.

Officers plan on stopping and arresting those suspected of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, Jenny said.

Friday's saturation patrols are part of the Napa Police Department's ongoing traffic safety campaign.

"When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes," Jenny said. "Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized proactive DUI operations are conducted routinely."

Funding for the DUI operation is provided to the Napa Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Napa PD supports the new effort from the Office of Traffic Safety that aims to educate all drivers that 'DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze,'" Jenny said. "If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI."

The Napa Police Department encourages residents to download the Designated Driver VIP, or "DDVIP," mobile app for Android or iPhone. The app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for sober designated drivers.
