Napa Police: Sonoma Bank Robbery Suspects Were Wanted For Multiple Crimes

BREAKING: Napa detectives had been investigating and trailing Catrina Hockney and Miguel Maravilla, Napa police said late Monday afternoon.

NAPA, CA — Napa police said Monday afternoon that a duo arrested on suspicion of a Sonoma bank robbery Saturday is suspected of several recent attempted robberies — and one successful one — in Napa and Solano counties. Additionally, a third suspect has been arrested in connection with the string of alleged crimes. With Catrina Rose Hockney, 34, and Miguel Angel Maravilla, 45 currently jailed in Sonoma County after their arrests Saturday, the Napa Police Department said it will seek arrest warrants for the Napa residents on suspicion of several additional charges related to: an attempted armed robbery Aug. 13 at Lola's Market in Napa; an armed robbery Aug. 27 at Pueblo Market in Napa; and attempted robberies Sept. 6 at Amigo's Market in Napa and a Taco Bell in Benicia.

Napa police detectives had begun trailing the pair Friday, allegedly watching as they cased several banks and businesses in Napa and American Canyon, said Napa police Sgt. Amy Hunter.

"The surveillance continued Saturday morning ... when Hockney and Maravilla drove to the city of Sonoma and appeared to be casing businesses there," Hunter said.

Napa detectives had been "working in close coordination with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office for several hours," when the robbery was reported at 2 p.m. at Wells Fargo at W. Napa and 5th West streets, Hunter said.

Sonoma sheriff's deputies conducted at traffic stop on Maravilla and Hockney shortly thereafter and took the pair into custody — their investigation allegedly revealing that Hockney carried a lunchbox during the robbery, from which she pulled a demand note, and that Maravilla acted as the getaway driver.

As part of the Napa Police Department's investigation, Hockney's mother, 53-year-old Shontaine Brayton, was arrested at 11:30 a.m. Monday as she left Hockney and Maravilla's residence in the 2900 block of 1st Street in Napa, Hunter said.

Brayton was booked into Napa County jail on suspicion of felony conspiracy and felony accessory after detectives allegedly found a key piece of evidence — a handgun — in a bucket.

Below is the timeline surrounding the Napa Police Department's investigation into Hockney, Maravilla and eventually Brayton, as provided in a news release late Monday afternoon.

On 8/13/17 at approximately 07:07 am, an employee at Lola’s Market (2750 Old Sonoma Rd. Napa, CA) called 9-1-1 reporting excitedly that there were two subjects inside a vehicle with masks on in front of their business. The subjects were reported to be armed with firearms in the back of the waistband. The business employees locked its doors and the suspect was unable to get in. Approximately an hour later, Napa Police Department patrol officers stopped a vehicle matching the description. A bag was covering the rear license
plate. Miguel Maravilla and Catrina Hockney were located inside the vehicle. The bag that had been covering the plate was removed and found to have two cut out holes where eyes would be. The bag was covering the rear license plate. No weapons were located in the car or on their persons at that time. The vehicle was towed for expired registration.

On 8/27/17, at approximately 09:53 am, a female enter Pueblo Market (2107 W Pueblo Ave. Napa, CA) wearing a scarf covering her face. The female pulled out what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun from the right side of her waistband. The female robbed the clerk and got away with an undisclosed amount of money.

On 9/6/17 at approximately 2:00 pm, a male attempted to rob the Amigos Market (2877 Solano Ave. Napa, CA) but did not complete the robbery. At approximately 6:30 pm that same night, Taco Bell (700 Military W Benicia, CA) also had an attempted armed robbery by a suspect matching the description of the attempted Amigo’s Market robbery. Witnesses from the Benicia incident were able to provide a description of the suspect vehicle.

Through surveillance videos provided by both local residents and businesses in the area of Amigo’s Market, Napa Police Department detectives were able to identify a similar vehicle circling the area during the time of the robbery. The weapon in both crimes was a semiauto handgun.

On 9/8/17 at approximately 00:26 am, Napa Police Department patrol officers located an unoccupied vehicle matching the vehicle seen in the surveillance videos of the attempted robbery at Amigo’s Market. That vehicle was registered to Catrina Hockney of Napa.

Later on 9/8/17, Napa Police Department detectives conducted surveillance of Hockney and Maravilla in the suspect vehicle as they appeared to case numerous banks and businesses in the Cities of Napa and American Canyon. The surveillance continued Saturday morning, 9/9/17, when Hockney and Maravilla drove to the City of Sonoma and appeared to be casing businesses there.

Napa Police Department detectives were working in close coordination with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office for several hours. At approximately 2:00 pm deputies received a call of a bank robbery that occurred at the Wells Fargo Bank, located at W. Napa and 5th West in the City of Sonoma. Maravilla and Hockney were observed driving away from the scene.

Napa Police Department detectives served a search warrant at Hockney and Maravilla’s residence in the 2900 block of 1st Street in the City of Napa and located evidence linking both subjects to the Napa and Benicia robbery/attempted robberies.

During the continued investigation, Napa Police Department detectives developed information that indicated a key piece of evidence was still hidden at the 1St Street house and had not been located during the initial search. Hockney directed a third party to have her mother, later identified as Shontaine Brayton, go retrieve an item from the house. Her mother, Shontaine Brayton, was stopped by Napa Police Department detectives leaving the residence on 9/11/17 at about 11:30 am with a handgun in a bucket. She was arrested for Felony Conspiracy (PC 182) and Felony Accessory (PC 32) and booked into Napa County Department of Corrections.

The Napa Police Department will be seeking arrest warrants from the Napa County District Attorney’s Office for Catrina Hockney and Miguel Maravilla for two counts of Attempted Robbery (PC 211); three counts of Armed while in the Commission of Committing a Felony (PC 12022(a)1); one count of Robbery (PC 211); and three counts of Conspiracy (PC 182), a Felony.
