Napa Schools Mourn Grad Killed In Thousand Oaks

Counselors help students cope with death of Alaina Housley, 18, who was among the massacre victims at Borderline Bar & Grill.

NAPA, CA – Vintage High School in Napa lowered its flag this week in memory of a former student, 2018 graduate Alaina Housley, who was among 12 fatally shot Wednesday night at a country music bar, Borderline Bar & Grill, in thousand Oaks,

"We are heartbroken ... by the news that one of our own, 2018 Vintage High School graduate Alaina Housley, was killed in a mass shooting in Southern California," district Superintendent Rosanna Mucetti said in a statement.

Housley, 18, a freshman at Pepperdine University, leaves behind her parents, Hannah and Arik Housely, who own Ranch Markets Napa Valley in Yountville and Napa, and a brother, Alex.

"There are no words that are sufficient at a time like this, but we remain a strong, caring community who will join together to enfold the Housleys and their friends with support, Mucetti said.

Alaina also was the niece of former Fox News national correspondent Adam Housley, who told the Los Angeles Times that she remained unaccounted for Thursday morning, but her Apple Watch and iPhone continued to show her location as the dance floor at Borderline Bar & Grill.

The Napa County Sheriff's Office extended its sympathies saying Housley was a beautiful young woman full of life and ambition.

"She moved to Southern California to further her education so she could contribute to society, however her dreams were destroyed by a senseless act," the sheriff's office said.

"Our condolences go out to the Housley family, the family of Ventura County sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus and the families of the other 10 victims who died during this horrible tragedy in Thousand Oaks," the sheriff's office said.

Ian David Long, 28, a former Marine, shot and killed 12 people, including the sheriff's deputy, at the bar before killing himself.

Long, a Newbury Park resident, reportedly tossed smoke bombs into the Borderline Bar & Grill and opened fire just before 11:30 p.m. He used a legally purchased .45-caliber Glock handgun with an extended magazine, according to officials, who added they do not know if Long reloaded the gun during the incident and do not know how many rounds were in the weapon.

A neighbor of Long's told reporters he was known to suffer from PTSD. He lived with his elderly mother and was known to kick in the walls of the home in fits of rage, neighbor Richard Berge, 77, told the Los Angeles Times.
