NVOS artist Robert Zlomke has been designing and making wood furniture in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than thirty years, combining a plain contemporary style with a craftsman’s touch. He likes to explore the visual tension between the way a tree grows and the geometry imposed when we make things out of wood, and he is always on the lookout for unexpected shapes.
Robert likes tool and pencil marks for their reminders of the fabrication process, and knots and waney board edges for their interesting texture. He likes to be surprised when a project takes control of itself.
Robert works in a shop he built himself, on the footprint of a ramshackle outbuilding which he and his wife acquired on moving to Napa in 1987. He welcomes commissions.
You can meet Robert Zlomke at Studio #1 during Open Studios, and see his artwork and workshop at 340 Foothill Blvd. in Napa, California. You can also find his work online at www.zlomkefurniture.com.
