📰 News we're reading

1. Unusual Baby Gull Rescue For Napa Firefighters (patch.com) — Napa firefighters responded to an unusual call when a young gull became snagged on a parking lot light after a fishhook in its foot got caught, leaving the bird dangling and helpless. Crews carefully freed the gull and turned it over to Napa County Animal Control, which brought it to a local wildlife rescue center for treatment and evaluation.

2. Women Rescue St. Helena Thrift Stores For Good Cause (patch.com) — In nearby St. Helena, two women stepped in to save La Bohème and Act Two thrift stores, keeping vital, affordable shopping options and charitable support in Napa Valley. Their new Goleno-Wilken Foundation now channels store proceeds to Parkinson's programs and neighbors in need, while maintaining beloved community gathering spots for locals, vineyard workers, and longtime shoppers.

3. 178-unit Napa housing project advances despite commissioners' concerns (napavalleyregister.com) — A 178-unit affordable housing complex on Byway East is moving from Napa's Planning Commission to the City Council, despite commissioners' worries about height, parking, and limited open space. Nearly all units would be income-restricted, using state density bonus rules that sharply limit the city's discretion. Neighbors raised concerns about traffic, flooding, and overflow parking as the council prepares to take up the project.

4. The 49-year old Napa winery facing rare foreclosure lives another day (sfchronicle.com) — A longtime Napa winery, Signorello Estate, narrowly avoided foreclosure Friday when its public auction at the Napa County courthouse was postponed two weeks at the lender's request. The 49-year-old winery, rebuilt after the 2017 Atlas Fire and now burdened by high-interest debt, will keep operating while the owner meets with American AgCredit to discuss its future.

5. Theater troupe with Napa Valley College roots seeks to reflect local Latino community (pressdemocrat.com) — A Napa Valley College–born theater troupe is building a Spanish-language stage home for the local Latino community, most recently with a fully Spanish production of "Barrio Hollywood" on campus. Founders and first-time actors describe how hard it is to find Latino, Spanish-speaking performers in Napa and how grants and local partnerships are helping them grow. Their goal is to keep expanding Latino-focused theater opportunities for Napa audiences.
