Director Carol Reed's The Third Man is just about as perfect a film you could ever hope to see. It is an amazing feat in both storytelling, direction, photography and mood. It is thought provoking, flawless and atmospheric with a fantastic eye for detail and story. The screenplay was written by novelist Graham Greene, who subsequently published the novella of the same name. It won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, a British Academy Award for Best Picture, and an Oscar for Best Black & White Cinematography. It is considered one of the greatest films of all time. Host Richard Miami will introduce the film with stories about the genesis of the story, casting challenges and filming in post-WWII Vienna
The Third Man (1949)Directed By Carol ReedA worldwide phenomenon when released, The Third Man is a cinematic icon. Pulp novelist Holly Martins (Joseph Cotton) travels to shadowy, post-war Vienna, only to find himself investigating the mysterious death of an old friend, black-market opportunist Harry Lime (Orson Welles) - and thus begins this legendary tale of love, deception and murder. This film noir classic features some of cinema's most memorable set pieces - the chase through the sewers, the enormous ferris wheel, the elm-lined cemetery...and Anton Karas' zither score. Thanks to brilliant performances by Joseph Cotton, Alida Valli and Orson Welles; Graham Greene's razor-sharp dialogue; and Robert Krasker's dramatic use of light and shadow, The Third Man was nominated for three Oscars and named to the AFI's Top 100 Movie list. 104 minutes
