Mandatory Water Restrictions Expected In Newark
A vote is planned tonight when the Alameda County Water District Board holds a public hearing to declare a Water Shortage Emergency.
NEWARK, CA — Newark residents and businesses could face mandatory water restrictions, depending on a vote expected this evening by the Alameda County Water District Board of Directors.
The Board will consider adoption of an Ordinance that declares a water shortage emergency and adopts mandatory water use restrictions to achieve a 15-percent water use reduction.
Months of voluntary restrictions have not successfully gotten the district to the 15-percent threshold.

According to the Water Board, "The Ordinance focuses primarily on outdoor water use, such as eliminating water waste, limiting outdoor irrigation while maintaining landscape viability and minimizing other non-essential use."
If approved, violators of the mandatory restrictions will face:

- a written warning.
- on-site notification.
- termination of water service. "Flow restrictors may be installed where termination of water service is not feasible. The customer will be charged applicable fees established in the District’s Rate and Fee Schedule."
- restoration of water service only after the customer has paid all charges owed to the District under this Ordinance.
