NEWARK, CA — The Newark Police Department issued a warning just before noon on Friday that residents and businesses are being targeted in an email scam. Two reports were made to police Friday morning.
As you can see from the photo above, the emails pretend to come from the City of Newark. The email is FROM: “noreply@newark.org”. The Subject of the email lists: “[secure] City of Newark”.
The city did not send the emails, which have attachments requesting personal information. If you fill it out, the information is automatically sent to the scammer and, according to police, "allows the Scammer to gain access to your personal accounts."
A local resident received the email, but so did a company in Southern California.
"The Newark Police Department would like to remind the general public that the City of Newark will never email you or your business requesting your personal information," they advise.
