UPDATE: Newark Police, SWAT Involved in Standoff With Barricaded Suspect, Reports Say
Roads in Newark have been closed during the standoff situation.
Police are negotiating with a domestic violence suspect who is allegedly holding a baby captive in Newark this evening, a Newark police commander said.
Commander Mike Carroll said officers went to a home in the 36700 block of Sycamore Street at 9:14 a.m. this morning to deliver an emergency protective order to the mother of the child, who they thought was at home. But when officers arrived the father was at home with the baby and the mother at work, Carroll said.
Carroll said the father has been involved in two other domestic violence incidents in the past two weeks, and a warrant is out for his arrest. Carroll said police are going to be very patient because a baby is involved. Officers have thought they were going to be able to resolve the situation at numerous points today, but it has continued into this evening, Carroll said.
