Newark Police Warn Residents About Phone Scam
The fraudulent caller claims to be calling from Walmart and demands money — or the victim will be turned into police.
NEWARK, CA — The Newark Police Department is warning that residents are receiving scam phone calls from someone claiming to work for Walmart. So far the calls are coming from the number 800-925-6278.
According to police, the caller claims that the resident owes a large sum of money because of a fraudulent transaction. The caller knows personal information about the person, such as their name, address or email in addition to their phone number. All of this information is readily available online.
The fraudulent caller offers to transfer the person to law enforcement because of the debt, then asks the resident to wire money to the caller to clear the debt.

Police advise, "If you receive a phone call like the one described, do not provide personal or financial information especially highly sensitive information. Be aware that phone numbers can be disguised to appear as though they are linked to a legitimate business."
