Newark's New Police Chief: Meet Mike Carroll

Carroll was hired as a rookie officer in Newark and rose through the ranks. He took command on July 1.

NEWARK, CA — The Newark Police Department has a new Chief. Mike Carroll took over the position on July 1, 2017.

While new in his position, Carroll is hardly new with the department. He was hired as a Police Officer by the City of Newark in April 1991. He worked as a patrol officer for four years before being selected as a School Resource Officer and Explorer Advisor in 1995. After returning to Patrol in 1999, he served in a variety of assignments including Field Training Officer, Hostage Negotiator, and Trauma Support Team Member. He was then assigned to the Southern Alameda County Gang Suppression Task Force as a Detective from 2002-2006.

Carroll was promoted to Sergeant in 2008 and was responsible for supervising a shift in the Patrol Division, as well as the Field Training and Canine Programs. He was then assigned to oversee the Detective Division from 2010-2012.

He was promoted to the rank of Commander in April 2012, serving as the Support Services Division Commander. The Support Services Division includes Investigations, Communications (Dispatch), and the Records Division. He was responsible for Internal Affairs, Technology, Professional Standards, Public Information Officer, Social Media, Community Engagement, the Red Light Camera System, as well as Personnel, Training, and Hiring for the police department. In 2016, he assumed the additionally responsibilities of patrol operations, SWAT, and K-9.

Carroll has a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University Hayward. He also graduated from the Police Executive Research Forum’s (PERF) Senior Management Institute of Policing Program at Boston University and the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Command College.

Carroll and his wife Lisa are the parents of three children; James, Melissa, and Matthew.

In his free time, the new police chief coaches a local high school soccer team and is a member of the Newark Rotary Club.
