Police Investigating Collision Involving Car, Amtrak Train in Newark

Newark police investigated a collision in which an unoccupied vehicle was struck by a southbound Amtrak train on tracks Wednesday evening, according to an Alameda County fire official. The collision on Cedar Boulevard at the tracks occurred around 8:25 p.m., according to Alameda County Battalion Chief Stephanie Radecke.

The vehicle attempted to cross the tracks in front of the train but failed to make it in time. However, the vehicle’s three occupants were able to exit the vehicle before the collision. No injuries were reported, among the vehicle’s occupants or among the 22 people on the train, Radecke said. Firefighters cleared the area, but the train remained at the scene with front-end damage, blocking the tracks.

Passengers were delayed in getting to their destinations, but Radecke noted that some enterprising people on board have started calling for Uber drivers to pick them up at the scene.
