10 Things to do NOW to Help Pass A Long-Overdue Increase in California’s Tobacco Tax
American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association have come together to support Proposition 56

According to the Centers for Disease Control, smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and causes one of every three deaths from CVD. In addition, exposure to secondhand smoke causes heart disease in nonsmokers. The American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association have come together to support Proposition 56 on the November ballot. Prop. 56 proposes to add a $2 state tax to buying a pack of cigarettes. Currently, California has one of the nation’s lowest tax rates on cigarettes.
Funds generated by this tobacco tax would be dedicated to the state to improve existing health care programs, prevent smoking, and fund research into cancer and other tobacco-related diseases.
