Kids can earn free burgers for reading, enjoy storytimes at local library branches, and submit artwork that will be displayed at the Central Library with cash prizes awarded early next year.

Tropical orcas make rare showing off California coast (mercurynews.com) β Residents and whaleβwatchers off Newport Beach were treated to rare sightings of a pod of Eastern Tropical Pacific orcas cruising just offshore, thrilling local tour boats and families. The pod of about 13 whales, including calves, moved north from Dana Point past Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. Naturalists say the elusive whales appear only occasionally, so operators are watching closely in case they linger nearby.

'Behemoth!,' Starring Pedro Pascal, to Close Newport Beach Film Festival (variety.com) β Newport Beach film lovers can look forward to the 27th annual Newport Beach Film Festival running Oct. 15β22, capped by closing-night film "Behemoth!" with director Tony Gilroy and production designer Jade Healy in attendance. The festival, which draws more than 50,000 attendees, will also showcase a wide slate of international features and special Q&As, reinforcing Newport's status as a major cinema hub.

A Tale of Two Shores: San Clemente, Newport Beach and the Search for Sand in OC (voiceofoc.org) β Newport Beach is moving quickly to add about 100,000 cubic yards of sand to its beaches ahead of a predicted strong El NiΓ±o, contrasting sharply with San Clemente's struggle to fund major replenishment. City leaders credit Newport Beach's long-running sand program and stronger tax base for putting local shorelines, homes, and infrastructure in a better position against erosion.
