Angels and Rod Carew to Launch Heart of 29 with the American Heart

The Los Angeles Angels, in partnership with baseball legend Rod Carew and his wife Rhonda, will launch a year-long campaign to promote awareness of cardiovascular disease. The Heart of 29 campaign honors the Carew’s wish to assist the American Heart Association following the Hall of Famer’s recent heart attack and subsequent surgery. Rod had an LVAD (left ventricular assist device) implanted during surgery and is anticipating the possibility of a heart transplant. The California campaign will kick-off at Angel Stadium on Tuesday, June 14th against the Minnesota Twins (Carew played for both the Angels and the Twins from 1967-1985). He will throw out the first pitch of the game and be accompanied by friend and former Angel, Clyde Wright.

Crediting Carew, Wright recently underwent bypass surgery after doctors discovered a blockage. He credits Carew with saving his life by prompting him to see a doctor after his own heart surgery.

“I’m a lucky one. I have no right to be living,” said Carew. “I felt fine, then September 20th came and my life changed forever. The American Heart Association has identified 7 simple rules to healthy heart and I urge everyone to follow these, then go to a doctor and get checked before it’s too late,” he continued.

The American Heart Association raises awareness through National Wear Red Day and “Red Outs” throughout the year. On June 14th, both the Angels and Twins will be wearing a Heart of 29 patch to honor Carew and the campaign during pre-game batting practice. Fans will also be able to purchase tickets for the game and receive a special red Angel hat with a Heart of 29 patch. A portion of the tickets sold will benefit the American Heart Association.
