GermanSchool Campus in Newport Beach Starts the New School Year with an Old German Tradition
"Schultüte". A traditional German 'school cone' marks the first day of school for the students of GermanSchool campus

Oktoberfest, pretzels, beer and sauerkraut are German icons that we are quite familiar with here in the United States, but did you know about the German tradition of a "Schultüte"?
The Schultüte, or school cone, is an oversized cone-shaped goodie bag and traditionally filled with candy, small school supply items and other surprises. It marks the first school day of every first grader in Germany. Dating back to the 18th century, this tradition of the “Schultüte” is celebrating a turning point in a child’s life, who leaves his carefree life for a 12-year academic adventure ahead. It’s a symbol for a new beginning.
GermanSchool campus' principal Ursula Schoeneich surprised each of her new students this week with just that, a German school cone. She herself has fond memories of the time when she got her own on her very first day of school in her native Germany. "It's just such a nice tradition to start out the seriousness of life. I remember, I was so proud of my school cone!" she laughs.

At her school in Newport Beach, teachers put attention not only on teaching the German language but also on introducing the students to German culture. This year, Ms. Schoeneich is particularly excited about welcoming her youngest students into her new class designed specifically for children ages 4-6 years old. The class will have the children engage with the concepts of the German language playfully through music, rhythm, songs and dance.
