Helicopter Crash Injures Two At John Wayne Airport
A large crane was needed to relocate the helicopter, disabled after the crash into the tarmac of John Wayne Airport on Labor Day.
NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Firefighters rushed to John Wayne Airport after a helicopter crash Monday afternoon, authorities reported. Both a flight instructor and a student were slightly injured when the helicopter they were flying in crashed shortly after takeoff at John Wayne Airport.
The crash took place at 3:36 p.m. on Labor Day afternoon, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Tony Bommarito and John Wayne Airport spokeswoman Deanne Thompson.
The Cabri G2 helicopter crashed on runway 20L at Taxiway J, according to the OCFA.

Both people were treated at the scene but refused transport to a hospital, Bommarito and Thompson said. No other injuries were reported.
There's no word yet on why the helicopter crashed.

The crash debris was being removed from the runway, Thompson said, adding there was no disruption in airline services.
The crash will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, Thompson added.
